Our on-site physiotherapist provides tailored treatment plans to aid recovery, achieve range of motion and strengthen your knee. With individual attention at each post operative visit and a physio program specific to each and every patient, you will receive focused care every step of the way.
Here’s how we support your recovery & wellbeing
Step 1.
Preparation for your consultation
Your journey begins before you even step foot in the door. We will assess any existing imaging, such as weight-bearing X-rays and/or MRI scans, to ensure you have appropriate pathology for a knee replacement procedure. We will coordinate an appointment here in our clinic and arrange for any up-to-date or additional imaging to take place prior to this appointment.
Step 2.
Consultation with Clinical Nurse & Dr Gallagher
At your initial consultation, our clinical nurse will take a thorough medical history and provide you with a likely pathway before introducing you to Dr John Gallagher. Dr Gallagher will review your imaging with you, discuss your options and explain what to expect before, during and after surgery. He will also share video examples of real patient outcomes. As you leave this consultation, our staff will provide you with comprehensive written information on your likely procedure, timing of appointments, surgery and costs.
Step 3.
Medical Clearance & Pre-Op Assessment
Before proceeding to surgery, you will need to be cleared medically by one of our colleagues at Queensland Physician Care based at the Wesley Hospital. This thorough check takes approximately one hour and involves identifying any underlying conditions, communicating with any other specialists involved in your care and ensuring that you are medically well enough for any surgical procedure.
Step 4.
Final Pre-Operative Appointment
Once medically cleared, you’ll return for a pre-operative consultation around two weeks before your surgery date. This is your opportunity to ask any remaining questions and sign the consent form. We also coordinate with any other specialists managing your medications or care.
Step 5.
Surgery at Brisbane Private Hospital
Your knee replacement surgery—whether total, partial, or robotic-assisted—is performed at Brisbane Private Hospital. Most patients stay 4–5 days as inpatients, with the option of additional recovery in the Rehabilitation Unit or at home, depending on individual needs.
Step 6.
Post-Operative Support & Follow-Up
Recovery is closely monitored through follow-up appointments at 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months post-surgery. These are held in conjunction with our in-house physiotherapist, Robert Godbolt, who helps guide your rehabilitation. By the 3-month mark, most patients are walking confidently and discharged after a final post-op X-ray confirms everything is healing well.

Frequently Asked Questions
We perform total knee replacements, partial knee replacements and robotic-assisted procedures. Dr Gallagher will recommend the most appropriate option based on your condition, lifestyle and medical history.
Robotic-assisted knee replacement uses advanced technology for greater precision in implant placement and soft tissue balancing. This technique often results in smaller incisions, less post-operative pain and a faster recovery.
If you're experiencing chronic knee pain due to arthritis that’s no longer responding to non-surgical treatments, you may be a candidate. During your initial consultation, we’ll review your scans, medical history and lifestyle goals to determine the best approach.
In some cases, patients are suitable for bilateral knee replacements (both knees at once). If you have underlying medical concerns, Dr Gallagher may recommend staging the surgeries to ensure your safety.
It’s normal for your knee to be swollen, warm and stiff in the early stages of recovery. Bruising, discomfort and some numbness around the incision are also common and can last for several weeks or months.
With regular physiotherapy, flexibility and strength gradually improve. Swelling may come and go—especially after activity—but we’ll guide you through each stage so you know what to expect.
Yes, we only accept patients with private health insurance. While your health fund will cover a significant portion of the procedure, there will still be out-of-pocket costs and these will be clearly advised in writing well prior to your surgery.
